Two weeks ago we started a new campaign in the Partido de Patagones. This year we managed to get a house, lent by the people of the Livestock Association of Villalonga (thanks Beto!), to build our base camp.

These last days we were visiting different livestock establishments to find suitable places to place camera traps. We could see that the problem with the puma is still alive in the region. Many of the producers told us of their concern about the loss of sheep due to depredation by the "lion". One of Villalonga's neighbors, Hector, told us that in the days prior to our visit the cougar had killed 9 sheep that were roaming in their field along with two donkeys (this animal would apparently work as an animal guard defending the sheep from the attack of the puma). Faced with this loss, the next night Hector decided to lock them in a smaller paddock keeping the donkeys with them. However, the cougar attacked that same night killing four other sheep. So, are donkeys effective as animal keepers?

On the recommendation of a neighbor, Hector built a smaller corral and with fences much higher than the previous ones. There he will begin to keep the sheep every night together with the donkeys.
We still do not know if Hector has managed to mitigate the predation events with this system. However, we believe that there is no single effective system to prevent puma attacks and that the use of various management techniques (in this case, use of animal guards and enclosure) could be the most effective solution to mitigate this conflict.
