¿Es posible cambiar? - Is it possible to change?
- Management and livestock management;
- Presence of wildlife in the fields;
- Presence of predation events by the carnivores of the region;
- Quantification of the loss of domestic animals by carnivores;
- Actitudes and perceptions towards the local fauna.
We were able to interview a total of 60 producers who, in the majority, expressed a general discomfort towards the current situation of the field. Several interviewed, among other things, made us notice a great concern about the climate changes in the region. The habitats of Villarino and Patagones, after the drought between 2007 and 2010, suffered alterations and are still recovering. In addition, along with the clearing, the process of desertification continues to advance and the fields, as the producers say, "fly". Another problem that is not indifferent is the issue of the abandonment of the fields. In fact, walking along the neighborhood roads, one can easily realize the number of closed gates and abandoned fields. The same happens in the case of rural schools.
Another controversy that is often heard, among the people who work in the fields, is the attacks on livestock by wild animals. The fox and the puma turned out to be the most harmful predators.
Producers describe the fox as an animal that mainly preys on newborn lambs and that can also feed on farmyard animals (chickens, roosters, etc.). On the other hand, they say that the puma can cause more extensive damage. Their main domestic preys can be: calves (no more than 2 months old), sheep and foals. During this campaign, we could notice that the producers denounce that the biggest cause of death of sheep in these districts is by the pumas.
As you can see, the situation for these species turns out to be critical. From our group we propose to improve it, but of course we need the collaboration of the producers and the entities that group them.
We hope to obtain it!
