Nuevos logros - New achievements
Hello
everyone! Sebastian Martinez Silva is a student in the Master in
International Ecology at University of Sherbrooke (Canada), whose
6-months long internship with our team is about to end.
The objective of his project was to describe habitat use and activity patterns of puma in the southern part of the Espinal. To accomplish this objective, he used camera trap photos collected in an area in Patagones County in 2014 and 2015.
Through his results we were able to understand that puma fundamentally select areas far from the main road, with large-sized ranches and where the proportion of cropland is low. In addition, this big cat prefers areas with high habitat heterogeneity, where different vegetation covers and wild prey are available.
The analysis of activity patterns showed that, both in winter and summer, pumas are mostly nocturnal, with peaks of activity just before dawn.
